I just downloaded the latest Lucid CD i386 desktop image:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Tried to boot it up in VirtualBox, but no dice. Just wondering if
anyone else has had a similar experience.

Does "it" refer to Lucid, Virtual Box, or Lucid in Virtual Box?

Really? I've been running lucid for various reasons in virtualbox
(both in open source version on karmic host and the "closed" version for
os x) for over a month with essentially no problems.

Can you describe the problem(s), or point me to a bug in launchpad?

Encrypted drive support is really broken. Using LUKS/dm-crypt on root
usually functions but separate encrypted volumes loaded by fstab
usually fail. Mounting on login using pam-mount always fails (since
Jaunty). Ralink wireless drivers are a real mess and are targeted for
rework after 2.6.33. I had another PCMCIA 802.11b card (non-Ralink
but I can't remember exactly ATM) that always hardlocks the kernel.
X.org Intel drivers are barely usable. Nautilus and Gnome VFS has all
kinds of problems with duplicate volumes showing up in the panel
(since Karmic) and still doesn't support NFS (broken for many years).
Xubuntu still has problems with xfce-panel randomly not loading at
login (>3 years now). Apt will happily run a system out of space
during package install. GUI and Alternate installers still horrible
with RAID/LVM2/LUKS/dm-crypt support. Lots of bugs for all of these
already in launchpad. There's more but I can't keep track of them all
anymore.

In my case, I'm running VirtualBox 1.5.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (hardy)
and the Lucid CD has the date 3-Mar-2010. When I start the VM I get
the boot splash screen. But when I select "Try Ubuntu without
installing" all I get is a black screen with the cursor blinking the
upper left corner.

Does Ubuntu have something like the Debug and/or Failsafe option in Knoppix?

- Robert

I'm actually running Lucid on this laptop and a desktop at work. I've not
tested it in a VM yet. I just grabbed a nightly .iso a week/two ago and
went with that.

I can try it out in VBox tomorrow. Maybe I got a lucky .iso. Unfortunately
I don't still have the iso around or I'd offer to put it up for download if
needed.
