I dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows XP. When I boot up Ubuntu, my left
mouse button doesn't work at all. Under Windows, the whole mouse works
fine. It is a Logitech wireless optical mouse. The computer is a Dell
Inspiron E1505 laptop. I disabled the trackpad in both Windows and
Ubuntu, because the left trackpad button constantly misfires. Can
anyone tell me a fix that doesn't involve the left mouse button? I
don't know any keyboard shortcuts to get into a terminal.

I'm investigating a solution now, however to help you right away
ctrl-alt-t will open a terminal.

You can always do Alt+F1 to open the gnome menu and arrow around to
find the launcher for gnome-terminal. I think since 10.04, ctrl-alt-t
will also open gnome-terminal.

Are you all up to date with updates? I found this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/linux/+bug/636311

But it seems to have been fixed with updates, in a terminal you can run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

and that should have updates if you haven't done so yet.
