Hello, fellow Michigan Ubuntu users!

My Name is Trevor, and I just (literally) signed up for the LoCo. I
live about 30 miles outside of Detroit, and I've been running Ubuntu on
my HP Pavillion dv9000 for about 7 months, as well as a Debian server at
my place of work for about 1 month. I'm by no means a Linux guru, but I
certainly plan on getting there someday!

So far, it seems that every user on this list is down closer to Metro
Detroit, or over on the k-zoo side of the state. Not much activity
(so far) for the mid-Michigan area (Bay City, here).

Been using Ubuntu since February; would like to get rid of Windows
completely,. but I'm too addicted to Wow and Tabula Rasa to get rid of
my Windows partition wholly...

Ha. People who don't play games think they're so funny. If I could
change one thing about the Linux community, it would be the
seriousness with which we (as a whole) treat gaming. It keeps more
people than you think from using Linux.

As to Jason's dilemma, I believe WOW can be made to work under WINE or
Cedega (I refuse to play anything with a monthly subscription,
personally). Never heard of Tabula Rasa before.

I had it working under Crossover. I haven't been able to get it
working under WINE myself yet, but I haven't had the time to dedicate
to tinkering with it lately. I'm thinking of trying Cedega, in order
to see if Vent will work with that (it was listed on their web site)
as my guild uses Vent rather than TeamSpeak (TS has a native Linux
client, Vent doesn't...).

Tabular Rasa is a new game coming out in about 3 weeks. I'm part of
the recent beta test for it. Maybe I should make it a REAL beta test
;)

I have Windows XP working fine in a VMWare virtual workstation on my
Ubuntu laptop. But to be fair, in gaming you want performance, and I
don't think you get that with wine/VMware/etc.

At least the last time I tried VMware its support for 3d acceleration was
very poor which makes most gaming impossible (I used it for poker which was
fine:))

Wine has actually been known to get BETTER performance than Windows XP
and Vista under certain cases. Wine reimplements the needed parts of
DirectX to work in Linux and often times the libraries against which
Wine is written can be faster.

For example, imagine a game written to a slightly older DX, like 8 or 9.
On Windows the DX implementation might use software rendering for
something. In WINE, they might use hardware rendering if it is available.

As for VMWare, Workstation 6 now includes 3d acceleration. It is good
enough for things like compiz or Vista's Aero, but I'm not sure how fast
is it for games. Prior to Version 6 of Workstation, VMWare emulated a
10+ year old S3 Trio64 video chip. It had no 3d Acceleration. VMWare
Server still emulates this 2d chip. VMWare Player added the same 3d
support as workstation somewhere along the way (not sure when, I think
it was player 2.0).
